The 2006 alumni of Okelele Secondary School, Ilorin, have awarded scholarships to a few indigent students, ensuring the continuation of their education.

The scholarships were presented to the Senior and Junior Principals of the school on Monday in their respective offices at the school premises.

Comrade Abdulwaheed Onikanhun, the acting Chairman of the alumni set and former Head Boy, led the delegation.

He expressed the group’s commitment to supporting the school’s current students.

“We believe in giving back to our alma mater and ensuring that current students have the support they need to succeed,” Onikanhun stated.

He also urged the Kwara State government to repair the deteriorated road leading to the school. “The condition of the road is appalling and it hampers access to quality education. We appeal to the state government to prioritize its grading,” he added.

Alabidun Shuaib AbdulRahman, the General Secretary of the Association and former Library Prefect, highlighted the alumni’s motivation behind the scholarship.

“This initiative is our way of appreciating the profound impact the school had on us. There are many brilliant students here facing financial difficulties, and this scholarship aims to ensure that their academic pursuits are not hindered by such constraints,” AbdulRahman explained.

He also mentioned other ongoing initiatives by the alumni, including educational endowments and infrastructural development projects.

“We are also working on endowments and projects that will further improve the school’s facilities and provide more opportunities for students,” AbdulRahman noted.

Both the Senior Principal, Akanbi Abdulkadir Alubarika, Esq. and the Junior Principal, Alhaja Tawakaltu Na’Allah Owolabi, expressed their gratitude for the scholarships.

“This noble act will significantly benefit our students and is a testament to the strong bond between the alumni and the school. We are committed to ensuring the scholarships reach the most deserving students,” said the Senior Principal, Alubarika.

The Junior Principal, Owolabi added, “The alumni have written their names in gold in the history of our school. We will ensure this gesture is properly documented and remembered.”

The principals, who are also alumni of Okelele Secondary School, shared their pride in leading the institution that shaped their own lives.

“Being able to head the school that nurtured us is a unique privilege and a way of giving back to our alma mater,” they remarked.

In their closing remarks, the principals urged other alumni sets to follow suit in contributing to the development of the school, emphasizing the positive impact such gestures have on the student community.

“We encourage other alumni to come forward and support the school in any way they can. These contributions make a significant difference in the lives of our students,” Alubarika reiterated.
