2027: Tinubu right to prioritise governance over campaigns — TDF
By Alabidun Shuaib AbdulRahman
The Democratic Front has backed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to prioritise governance over attending every campaign rally ahead of the January 2027 presidential election, describing the move as a demonstration of commitment to national development.
The group said the decision showed that the President was willing to place official responsibilities above personal political interests as the country approached another election.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, TDF said the move reflected the administration’s “Nigeria First” policy, launched on May 5, 2025, following approval by the Federal Executive Council.
It also condemned criticism of the President’s decision by opposition politicians, particularly the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar.

“The pertinence of the President’s decision to prioritise governance over personal political interest is the remarkable proof of his readiness to walk the talk about his administration’s policy of ‘Nigeria First’,” the statement read.
TDF said Tinubu’s decision demonstrated the administration’s determination to sustain the gains of its economic reforms and prevent government business from stagnating during the election period.
The group described the criticism of the President’s campaign schedule as unpatriotic, arguing that a president should be able to discharge his constitutional responsibilities while his campaign team engages voters.
It said Tinubu had assembled a strong campaign team capable of presenting the administration’s achievements to Nigerians without requiring his physical presence at every rally.
TDF listed the administration’s economic reforms, student loan programme, security efforts, healthcare interventions and agricultural investments as reasons it believed Tinubu deserved another term.
According to the group, the President had introduced student loans to improve access to tertiary education for students from low-income families and had invested public funds in agriculture to reduce and stabilise food prices.
It also cited measures aimed at improving the treatment of kidney ailments and cancer in Nigeria, as well as efforts to strengthen public revenue and national productivity.
“We believe that a President like Bola Tinubu, who has turned the economy from the precipice, confronted insecurity head-on, and introduced student loans to provide easy access to tertiary education for indigent students, does not need much campaigning to persuade the electorate for his re-election,” the statement added.
The group argued that Tinubu’s physical absence from some campaign rallies would not prevent his supporters from presenting his record to voters.
TDF said opposition candidates would be mistaken to interpret the President’s decision to devote more time to governance as a political advantage for their campaigns.
It maintained that prioritising official duties during the election period was in the country’s interest and described the decision as an example of leadership that should be emulated.
