Boat Mishap Claims Lives in Gbajibo Community, Mokwa

In the early hours of Sunday, a tragic boat mishap occurred in Gbajibo, a village situated in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.

This unfortunate incident took place within the Gbajibo Waterway, affecting residents from neighboring communities, including Gbajibo, Ekwa, and Yan-kede, who were en route to their farms.

While the exact number of victims remains unconfirmed, INCNews247 reporter at the scene counted twenty-four (24) lifeless bodies, comprising 19 women and 3 men.

Promptly responding to the distressing news, the Executive Chairman of Mokwa Local Government, Hon. Jibril Abdullah Muregi, expressed his profound sorrow over the boat mishap that claimed the lives of residents in Gbajibo, Ekwa, and Yan-kede villages.

He dispatched a delegation of council executive members, led by his vice chairman, Hon. Alh Musa Kimbokun, to convey his condolences to the grieving families on his behalf.

“The tragic situation in Yan-kede, Ekwa, and Gbajibo villages was a result of the water’s turbulence as the deceased were en route to their farmland on the opposite side of the river,” lamented the council leader.

In Yan-kede Village, one household suffered a devastating loss, with eight lives, including the daughter and grandchild of a prominent politician in Mokwa town, Hajiya Ya Kashi (Nna-a’tu), tragically taken.

The lifeless bodies of those recovered have been accorded dignified burials following Islamic rites, while search and rescue operations continue in the hope of finding any remaining victims.

The council delegation solemnly gathered at the gravesite of the recovered victims to offer farewell prayers. Led by the Vice Chairman of Mokwa Local Government, Hon. Musa Aliyu Kimbokun, the delegation included the Council Hon. Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abu Isah; Councilor representing Muwo/Gbajibo ward, Alh. Apama; Council Secretary, Alh. Dauda Liman; Protocol to the Council Chairman, Comr. Rabiu Tatabu; and the Director of Special Duties, also representing NSEMA, Alh. Suleiman Edugi.
