Court Sends Obasanjo’s In-law to 7 Years in Prison Over Fraud

By Alabidun Shuaib AbdulRahman

The Lagos State Special Offences Court has sentenced Dr John Abebe, who is a younger brother to the late former First Lady, Stella Obasanjo and also a former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s in-law, to seven years imprisonment for money laundering and forgery.

The judgement was delivered by Justice Mojisola Dada after the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Dr Abebe was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a four-count charge of fabricating evidence, using fabricated evidence, forgery, and attempting to pervert the course of justice before the court.

The charges were based on allegations by an oil company, Statoil Nigeria Limited, that Dr Abebe had forged parts of a Net Profit Interest Agreement (NPIA) drafted by British Petroleum in 1995.

According to EFCC, the ‘Buy Out Option’ that Dr Abebe claimed to have been entitled to only applies to the pre-production stage of the NPIA, and the $4m buy-out is thus irrelevant from the production of oil in any of the fields.

The commission also noted that Dr Abebe attempted to “pervert the course of justice by tendering the allegedly forged 30 November 1995 letter as fabricated evidence in court, in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/224/2010 between Inducon Nigeria Limited, Dr John Abebe and Statoil Nigeria Limited.”

The judgement also granted Dr Abebe an option of paying a fine of N50 million within 30 days in lieu of imprisonment.
