The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, has issued a clarion call for national unity in the face of escalating insecurity across Nigeria.
Speaking during a bi-weekly media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, urged citizens to forge solidarity with the military to effectively combat the prevailing threats.
He emphasized the pivotal role of citizens in the ongoing warfare, stating, “Our nation is at war, and wars can be complex and ugly… It is time for citizens to close ranks with the military to win this war.”

Buba urged all segments of society to emulate the unwavering commitment demonstrated by the nation’s gallant troops on the frontlines.
Drawing parallels with other domains of national excellence, he noted the potential for collective action to quell the flames of violence across the country.
“Unity is key to our victory in overcoming the security challenges confronting us as a nation,” asserted the General, highlighting the collaborative nature of warfare.
He reaffirmed the armed forces’ dedication to eliminating terrorist elements with utmost professionalism, confirming that such elements are left with only two options: surrender or face defeat.
Providing statistics to underscore the military’s effectiveness, the senior officer disclosed that in January 2024 alone, troops neutralized 266 terrorists, apprehended 463 violent extremists, and rescued 116 kidnapped hostages. Additionally, significant quantities of weapons and ammunition were seized, alongside substantial recoveries of stolen crude oil and other contraband.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, General Buba reiterated the need for collective responsibility, remarking, “Given all stated above, and because our security challenges are mostly self-inflicted, it is pertinent to urge citizens to rise up to the challenge. It is time to stop the bleeding in order for healing to commence.”
