Abroad Fake Certificates: FG Orders Immediate Termination of Over 22,000 Employees in Nigeria

In a bid to sanitize the education sector, the Federal Government has declared degree certificates from Cotonou University, Benin Republic, and other unaccredited institutions in Togo, invalid.
Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, made this known during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, marking his one-year anniversary in office.
According to Mamman, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the termination of employees in both public and private sectors who possess counterfeit degree certificates acquired from the Republics of Benin and Togo.

The affected individuals, numbering 21,684, obtained their certificates between 2017 and 2023 from Benin, while 1,105 others attended institutions in Togo.
Mamman emphasized that these institutions are not recognized in their respective countries, and therefore, their qualifications will not be recognized in Nigeria.
The Minister directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to issue a circular to all employers, mandating them to identify and terminate employees with fake certificates.
Similarly, the Head of Service has been tasked with fishing out affected personnel from the public service.
This move aims to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s education system and ensure that only genuine graduates are employed in the workforce.
