The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC has secured the conviction of a civil servant, Mr. Ewere Morgan Eseosa, for receiving double salaries totalling ₦1,328,255.47 from two government institutions over a period of more than two years.

INCNews247 reports that ICPC investigators found that Eseosa was on the payroll of the University of Benin as a Security Officer II while simultaneously drawing full pay as Special Assistant (Press Secretary) to the Ikpoba Okha Local Government Council in Edo State.

The offence, committed between September 2018 and February 2021, breached provisions of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.

He was arraigned before the Edo State High Court in Benin on two counts of obtaining by false pretence and cheating, contrary to Sections 419 and 421 of the Criminal Code Act 2004.

However, he entered into a plea bargain with the prosecution, leading to a single amended charge to which he pleaded guilty.

Justice Williams Aziegbemhin sentenced him to one year in prison or a fine of ₦150,000 and ordered him to refund the ₦1.3m illicit earnings to the Federal Government through the ICPC Recovery Account.

The Commission said the conviction underscores its resolve to ensure accountability in public service and deter corrupt practices among government officials.
