In 60 Days, IPOB Killed 26 Officers, Razed 19 Security Formations in South-East

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have killed at least 26 security officers and burnt down 19 security formations in the last 60 days across the Southeast zone, investigations by 21st CENTURY CHRONICLE have shown.

Data obtained through analysis of media reports from March 1 to April 30, 2021, revealed that 26 security officers, comprising 18 policemen, six soldiers and two personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, were killed in the incidents.

15 police formations, including state command and mostly police divisions, three military bases and central correctional centre were torched by the outlawed group in the zone.

In one of their daring campaigns, the separatists launched coordinated attacks on Imo State Police Headquarters and Nigeria Correctional Service Centre in Owerri, burning the buildings, torching over 50 vehicles, and setting free 600 suspects, and 2,000 inmates.

60 days of terror

On March 1, 2021, the hoodlums set ablaze Iboko Divisional Police Station in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State. But nine days later, another set of IPOB members invaded Isinweke Divisional Police Station in Ihitte Uboma local government area of Imo State, where they set ablaze the structure and several vehicles in the vicinity. In the two incidents, the police officers on duty escaped by luck.

Defiance of shoot-at-sight order

However, the hoodlums became deadlier day-by-day as they continued their heinous acts on security formations across the region, despite the shoot-at-sight order issued by President Muhammadu Buhari on March 4.

On March 18 they attacked a Police checkpoint at Neni in Anaocha local government area of Anambra state, killing three police officers and carted away their weapons. On the same day hoodlums also killed three Nigerian Navy personnel at an outpost in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area. The following day they killed two police officers – an inspector and a constable – when they attacked the Zone 13 Police Headquarters at Ukpo, near Awka. Some vehicles parked at the station’s premises were also razed during the attack.

Also, on March 19, and within the same axis, the hoodlums attacked a prison vehicle conveying some suspects to court in Ekwulobia, killing two personnel of the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCS). The attacker had earlier attacked Ekwulobia Police Station, but were repelled by the policemen men on duty, according to the spokesperson of Anambra state command, Toochukwu Ikenga who confirmed the incidents.

On March 22, the IPOB fighters shifted their atrocities to Abia state, when they attacked Abiriba Police station in Ohafia Local government area, and killed three police officers, burnt some patrol vans and carted away the slayed policemen rifles.

Imo police command, Owerri prison attacked

As innocent citizens continue to live in fear across the Southeast region, the hoodlums on April 5 launched coordinated attacks on the Imo state Police Command and the Correctional centre in Owerri, the state capital, and a military checkpoint at Ukwuorji community.

A police officer was wounded, 50 vehicles were set ablaze and 600 suspects freed during the attack on the Police command; 1,844 inmates were set free during the attack on the correctional centre; while five vehicles were burnt during the attack on the Ukwuorji military base.

IPOB’s campaign continued in Imo State unabated, sending shockwaves and tension across the state. Their attack on Ehime Police Division in Ehime/Mbano local government on April 6 left three vehicles burnt; while their invasion of Mbiere Police Division in Mbaitoli local government area on April 8 lefts many police officers injured.

The assailants also attacked Ugbodo Police Station of Ebonyi state on April 8, killing a police officer, while many others sustained injuries. But their crossfire with the police around the Abia State Police Command the same day resulted in no casualty from both sides.

The hoodlums continued their atrocities in Abia state, when on April 19 they burnt down the Uzuakoli Divisional Police Station – including private and official vehicles in vicinity – in Bende local government area.

On April 21 they burnt down Adani Divisional Police station in Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu State, and two police officers, leaving several others wounded. And on April 26, the assailants killed two soldiers at a military checkpoint along Timber Junction area in Afikpo North local government area of Ebonyi state. On the same day, they attacked Ehime Mbano police station in Okigwe South local government area of Imo State, killing five officers.

As the security operatives strive to curtail their activities, the assailants continue to spread their atrocities to other southern states like wide fire.
