Ishowo Tasks Kwara Govt to Intensify Public Sensitization on Environmental Laws

By Alabidun Shuaib AbdulRahman

A renowned public affairs analyst, Comrade Ishowo Olanrewaju has called on the Kwara State Government to intensify efforts in sensitizing the public on the importance of proper waste management and environmental conservation, following the recent conviction of 40 Ilorin residents for violating environmental laws.

In an interview with INCNews247 on Monday in Ilorin, Olanrewaju said, “The recent convictions are a step in the right direction, but we must not stop there. We need to educate the public on the dangers of indiscriminate waste disposal and the importance of proper waste management.”

He emphasized that the consequences of being an ex-convict are far-reaching, affecting employability, social and political standings, and warned that the implications are dire.

“Once you’re convicted, it’s like having a shadow that follows you everywhere. It affects your employability, social and political standings. The implications are dire, and those affected may not even be aware of them,” he said.

The analyst also highlighted the severe health implications of environmental degradation, including the spread of diseases and respiratory issues, as well as its social and economic impacts.

To address this, he recommended that the government use various methods to reach the public, including physical engagement and community outreach programs, media advocacy and public awareness campaigns, collaboration with community leaders and stakeholders, and education and sensitization programs in schools and public institutions.

“The government must engage the public and make them understand the dangers of environmental degradation. We cannot just arrest and convict people without educating them on the importance of environmental conservation,” Olarewaju said.

He also charged the public on strict adherence, asking the government to provide more ‘Roll-on Roll-off (RORO) bins’ in both metropolis and the interior parts of the State and adopt innovative solutions to turn waste into wealth, such as recycling programs, waste-to-energy conversion, or creating job opportunities in waste management. “This approach will not only reduce environmental degradation but also stimulate economic growth,” he said.
