Kwara Rolls Out Fresh Education Projects, Introduces Daily Peptalks in Schools

The Kwara State Government has announced a new wave of projects and policy reforms in the education sector, with a major push to entrench moral discipline and improve learning outcomes across public schools.

At the 3rd Quarter 2025 Inter-Ministerial Press Briefing held on Monday in Ilorin, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr Lawal Olohungbebe, said the government has introduced daily peptalks in all schools.

He said each day would focus on a uniform moral theme aimed at instilling discipline, integrity and character among pupils.

Olohungbebe noted that the state has embarked on “massive infrastructural development” between July and September, resulting in the completion and handover of several projects across the three senatorial districts.

Among the newly completed projects are the Prototype School at Adewole, Ilorin; Olokuta Senior Secondary School, Anfeyinoja; and a three-classroom block equipped with an office, furniture, toilets and a motorised borehole.

Mount Carmel Junior Secondary School, Ilorin, he added, received three new classrooms, an office, toilet facilities and a borehole.

Ansarul-Islam Secondary School, Osi, got a new examination hall, a two-room toilet facility and a borehole, while Senior Secondary School, Gbagba, benefited from a new examination hall to support large-capacity testing.

On policy reforms, the Commissioner said the government had updated several internal procedures to align with global standards.

He said the state worked closely with Education Management Information System (EMIS) officials on the Annual School Census and partnered with NGOs to train teachers and staff on digital literacy.

He also announced the creation of a Tripartite Committee comprising the Ministry, the Teaching Service Commission and the State Universal Basic Education Board to strengthen monitoring of students and teachers across the state.

According to him, recent achievements recorded by Kwara students are evidence of the impact of ongoing reforms.

He cited the participation of students in the Genius Illumina Project Exhibition in Lagos, where finalists emerged to represent Nigeria in the United States.

The Commissioner also celebrated Kwara’s victory at the 2025 President’s Debate in Abeokuta, where the state clinched the championship title. The winning team and their tutors were rewarded with ₦7m by the government.

Olohungbebe further disclosed that the online registration system introduced for the Common Entrance Examination had improved placement outcomes, adding that students’ performance in the BECE had also witnessed a notable boost.

He said the Agency for Mass Education recently trained 25 facilitators through the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, while three outstanding young women received vocational training and support through the LOIB Empowerment Initiative.

Speaking on the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), the Commissioner said the programme is expanding access to secondary education for girls in vulnerable communities.

He said AGILE recently trained 193 healthcare workers, 32 security personnel and 29 service providers on School-Related Gender-Based Violence protocols, and also trained more than 5,000 members of School-Based Management Committees on School Improvement Plans and gender-sensitive policy implementation.

He added that 140 additional trainers benefited from a digital literacy step-down workshop, while digital skills manuals for students were produced and converted to Braille for visually impaired learners.

Sensitisation campaigns on the Girls’ Scholarship Programme were also conducted across the three senatorial districts.
