Lawyers in Justice Ministry Collect N258mn for Robe Annually – Malami

According to the Ministry of Justice, the robe allowance for its 860 lawyers is N258 million every year.

Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, revealed this when appearing before the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters during the National Assembly’s 2022 budget defence.

Malami gave details of the lawyers’ allowance when Senator Emmanuel Orker-Jev (Benue) raised questions about the ministry’s personnel cost and its total number of lawyers.

The ministry’s N11.3 billion budget for 2022 includes N4.3 billion in overhead costs and N3.9 billion in staff costs.

Amazed by Malami’s submission, the senator said, “I used a robe more than 10 years.”

The chairman of the committee, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, however, interjected, explaining that the allowance was to make the lawyers presentable in court.
