Mutiny: DHQ Arraigns 36 Military Personnel

The Defence Headquarters, DHQ has on Friday inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel over alleged mutiny aimed at overthrowing the government.

 

The Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja, noting that the action followed an earlier position of the military high command on the matter.

 

According to Uba, the move is in furtherance of the Defence Headquarters’ statement of January 26, 2026, which addressed the allegations and set the stage for legal proceedings.

“The Defence Headquarters has today, April 24, 2026, inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel over alleged mutiny, aimed at overthrowing the government of the day,” he said.

 

He described the inauguration as a significant step towards reinforcing discipline, accountability, and the Armed Forces’ commitment to safeguarding national integrity and constituted authority.

 

Uba assured that the proceedings of the court martial would be conducted in line with established legal standards and military justice procedures.

 

“The inauguration marks a significant step in reinforcing discipline, accountability and the commitment of the Armed Forces to safeguarding national integrity and constituted authority,” he stated.

 

He added, “Proceedings of the court will be conducted with the highest standards of fairness, impartiality and strict adherence to due process, guaranteeing that justice will be served without fear or favour.”

 

The Defence spokesman emphasised that all cases would be handled within the provisions of the military justice system.

 

“All cases will be addressed within extant legal frameworks of the military justice system,” he said.

 

Uba further reiterated the resolve of the Defence Headquarters to uphold professionalism and the rule of law across the Armed Forces.

 

“The Defence Headquarters remains resolute in upholding professionalism, discipline and the rule of law while ensuring that the rights of all personnel are respected and the tenets of fair hearing upheld,” he added.
