National Library to Launch Club for Languages’ Preservation

The National Library of Nigeria says it will soon launch a family book club for the preservation of Nigerian languages.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi, stated this in Abuja on Monday while speaking as a panellist at an event in commemoration of the 2022 International Mother Language Day.

Anunobi said this year’s theme, ‘Using Technologies for Multilingual Learning: Challenges and Opportunities’, was apt taking into account that technology makes it easier to transcribe and translate.

The High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Nigeria, Masudur Rahman, said current data indicated that at least 40 per cent of the 7,000 languages used worldwide were at some level of endangerment.
