National Security: Armed Forces, ONSA, DSS, Other Nigerian Security Agencies Strengthen Collaboration

Nigerian security agencies have reinforced their collaborative efforts to ensure a safer and more secure nation, a first of its kind that aims to counter misinformation effectively.
This was made known by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, during a Joint Press Briefing by Security Defence and Response Agencies in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital on Thursday.
According to Buba, the joint press conference was organized under the auspices of the Strategic Communications Interagency Advisory Policy Committee, coordinated by the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA).
This committee acts as an umbrella body for the spokespersons of all Nigerian security and response agencies, facilitating unified and strategic communication to highlight collective activities over the past year.

He emphasized that the successes and achievements recorded in the last year are due to robust interagency collaboration, which has made security operations comprehensive, strategic, and effective.
While not all results can be reported due to the sensitive nature of ongoing operations, sharing available information will help counter misinformation and disinformation and garner public support for security efforts.
Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA)
General Buba highlighted the pivotal role of ONSA in coordinating national security strategies and ensuring synergy among various security agencies. During the period under review, ONSA hosted the High-Level Africa Counter-Terrorism Meeting, which gathered African Heads of Government, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, and leaders of other key global bodies, focusing on stability in the Sahel Region and combating terrorism and violent extremism.
Additionally, ONSA facilitated the UK-Nigeria security and defence dialogue and initiated economic security measures against currency manipulators in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria. Efforts in human and food security were also coordinated, aligning with a population-centric approach to national security.
Armed Forces of Nigeria
The Nigerian Armed Forces have made significant strides in the war against terrorism, with numerous terrorist leaders neutralized and thousands of terrorists and their supporters arrested. The forces have also rescued hostages and improved efforts in preventing crude oil theft. Interagency collaboration has greatly enhanced the performance of troops in various operations.
Maritime Security
Increased patrols and international collaborations by the Nigerian Navy have led to a substantial reduction in piracy incidents in the Gulf of Guinea. Anti-crude oil theft operations have recovered significant quantities of illegally refined petroleum products, further bolstering national security.
Intelligence Operations
The Department of State Security (DSS) and other intelligence agencies have played a critical role in safeguarding national security through intelligence gathering and covert operations. Intelligence-led operations have prevented numerous terrorist attacks and criminal activities, leading to the confiscation of illegal items and the apprehension of high-profile terrorist commanders.
Law Enforcement
The Nigeria Police Force and other law enforcement agencies have undertaken significant reforms and operations to enhance public safety. These include the restructuring of the intelligence department, the launch of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), and collaboration with international partners. The Nigeria Police Force has also successfully prosecuted numerous cases and improved security measures through digital support systems.
Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)
The NSCDC has bolstered internal security and protected critical infrastructure, establishing the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre and combating illegal mining activities. Enhanced communication initiatives and public awareness programs have furthered these efforts.
Custodial Management
The Nigerian Correctional Service has focused on enhancing custodial practices, improving inmate welfare, and decongesting custodial centers through various initiatives. Staff welfare has also been enhanced, contributing to the overall effectiveness of custodial management.
Anti-Corruption and Cybercrime
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) have led the fight against corruption, securing numerous convictions and recovering significant assets. The EFCC has taken bold steps against corruption and cybercrime, contributing to law and order.
Nigeria Customs Service
The Nigerian Customs Service has generated exceptional revenue and implemented various trade facilitation initiatives. Enhanced operational capacity and significant seizures of contraband goods have contributed to national security efforts.
Nigeria Immigration Service
The Nigerian Immigration Service has improved border governance and surveillance through the implementation of the e-Border Project and various technological upgrades. Public sensitization campaigns have raised awareness about the dangers of irregular migration.
Emergency Response
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corp have been effective in providing emergency response and achieving national resilience and security. Their efforts in distributing aid and coordinating intervention efforts have been crucial in various disaster situations.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, security agencies will focus on strengthening intelligence-sharing mechanisms, ensuring a people-oriented approach to security, investing in advanced technologies, and deepening partnerships with international allies. General Buba emphasized the importance of public support in achieving these goals, calling on all citizens and stakeholders to support the efforts of the security forces.
Through robust interagency collaboration, Nigerian security agencies have achieved significant progress, indicating that much more can be accomplished in the future.
