The Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, has urged the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union, IEDPU, to lead renewed efforts to rebuild the dwindling bond of love and unity among Ilorin indigenes.

Sulaiman made the call on Sunday during his visit to the newly built IEDPU FCT Secretariat located within the Ansar-Islam Society of Nigeria Mosque, Utako, Abuja.

Speaking with nostalgia, the former Minister of National Planning lamented what he described as the erosion of the communal spirit that once made Ilorin stand out as a model of brotherhood and shared aspirations.

He said Ilorin was known for a culture where residents placed community interest above political or personal considerations, stressing that the time had come for the IEDPU to revive that tradition.

“There was a time Ilorin people were truly their brothers’ keepers. We placed community interest above everything. That era brought us honour, and it is time to reinvent it,” he said.

Sulaiman commended the IEDPU FCT chapter for delivering what he called a “befitting secretariat” but cautioned the union against actions that could fuel internal divisions.

Earlier, the FCT Chairman of the union, Alhaji Lukman Atanda Abdullah, led the DG on a tour of the facility, including the yet-to-be furnished conference hall.

He thanked Sulaiman for the visit and pledged that the chapter would continue to pursue its legacy projects.
