The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC has announced that registration and enrolment for the National Identification Number at wards across the country will commence on Monday, February 16, 2026.

The commission said the exercise followed a presidential directive mandating it to take NIN enrolment to the grassroots and wards nationwide in order to boost identity coverage.

In a statement signed by the Head, Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, on Wednesday, the NIMC said the nationwide exercise was aimed at ensuring the comprehensive registration of every Nigerian citizen and legal resident, including children and adults, into the National Identity Database.

According to the commission, the enrolment will be conducted free of charge as part of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The ward-level enrolment initiative represents a strategic step towards deepening identity inclusion, decentralising services and bringing registration closer to communities, thereby improving accessibility, reducing travel burden and promoting nationwide participation,” the statement read.

The commission urged Nigerians and legal residents who are yet to enrol to take advantage of the opportunity, calling on families to register their children, parents and wards within their communities.

It disclosed that it had commenced engagements with stakeholders at the national, state and local government levels to ensure a smooth rollout of the exercise.

The NIMC said state governments, local government authorities, traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations and faith-based organisations were being consulted as part of sensitisation and awareness campaigns on the importance, benefits and uses of the NIN.

The commission added that ward enrolment schedules, which would guide the rotational movement of licensed front-end partners and NIMC staff, were available on its website.

Members of the public were advised to visit www.nimc.gov.ng for detailed schedules, while inquiries and complaints could be channelled through the commission’s toll-free line: 0800-061-6462.
