NITDA Urges Nigerians to Embrace Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Digital Future

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has called on Nigerians to take personal responsibility for their online safety as part of activities marking the 2025 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
In a statement by the Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, Mrs. Hadiza Umar on Monday, the Agency said this year’s campaign, themed “Cyber Hygiene for a Safer Tomorrow,” seeks to promote a culture of cyber awareness and responsible online behaviour among citizens.
According to the statement, NITDA warned that as the world becomes more digitally connected through phones, computers, and everyday internet use, the risks of cyber threats such as hacking, scams, and data breaches continue to grow.

“The reality is that one careless click can lead to identity theft, data loss, or financial fraud. Cyber safety begins with individual responsibility,” the statement read.
To combat these risks, the Agency advised Nigerians to adopt simple but effective cyber hygiene practices, including using strong and unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, keeping devices and applications updated, backing up important data, and avoiding suspicious links or attachments from unknown sources.
NITDA stressed that cybersecurity is not just a technical issue but a shared responsibility that requires collective effort across individuals, families, and organisations.
“When individuals protect themselves, they also safeguard their families, workplaces, and the broader digital community,” Mrs. Umar stated.
She added that the Agency remains committed to building a secure and digitally resilient Nigeria, urging all citizens to “stay alert, click wisely, and stay safe online.”
