Niger NPC Commissioner Tasks Journalists to Rally Support for Census

By Alabidun Shuaib AbdulRahman

The National Population Commission‘s Federal Commissioner for Niger State, Malam Muhammad Dattijo Usman, has called on journalists in the country to support the objectives of the upcoming National Population and Housing Census (NPHC).

Usman emphasised the importance of achieving credible, reliable, and acceptable results from the census during a press conference held at the IBB Pen House in Minna, the capital of Niger State.

Addressing concerns about the postponement of the census, Usman reassured Nigerians that it was not due to a lack of funds.

He clarified that the decision was made to allow the incoming administration of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu to contribute to the planning and execution of the exercise, as it will be conducted during his tenure.

Usman further clarified that the census questionnaire does not include questions related to ethnicity or religion.

He advised Nigerians to remain calm and ensure their participation in the population census.

Regarding hard-to-reach areas in Niger State, specifically the four local government areas of Munya, Mariga, Shiroro, and Rafi, which have been affected by banditry, Usman assured the population that they will be included in the census count.

He also emphasised the paramount importance of training and retraining officials who will be involved in conducting the census. The officials will operate within their respective localities to minimise errors during the exercise.

Usman highlighted that this census will be different from previous ones conducted in the country.
