The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has commended the Nigerian Army for providing a secure and conducive environment for corps members and NYSC formations across the country.

Nafiu gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the General Officer Commanding 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Jos, Major General Folusho Oyinlola.

According to a statement issued by the NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the DG noted that the scheme could not thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity, stressing that its success largely depends on the safe and peaceful environment provided by security agencies.

He praised the 3 Division for consistently discharging its responsibilities, noting that the NYSC had never been compelled to cancel the commencement of an orientation course in any state under the division’s jurisdiction due to security challenges.

Nafiu disclosed that more than 7,000 corps members are currently serving in Plateau State, contributing to the socio-economic development of the state through their various places of primary assignment.

He also highlighted the achievements of the scheme since its establishment, saying it had continued to promote national unity, integration and social cohesion through cultural exchanges, inter-tribal marriages, youth empowerment initiatives and job creation programmes.

The NYSC boss further noted that the scheme had made significant contributions to the health and education sectors through the deployment of corps doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to hospitals, as well as teachers to public schools across the country.

“We seek your continued support in providing an enabling environment for us to effectively discharge our mandate,” he said.

Nafiu added that the NYSC was currently implementing reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency and enhancing service delivery nationwide.

In his remarks, Oyinlola commended the NYSC DG for the initiatives and achievements recorded since assuming office.

He described Nafiu as a worthy ambassador of the Nigerian Army and lauded the NYSC Plateau State Coordinator, members of staff and corps members for their dedication and commitment to duty.

“Whether we like it or not, testimonies abound about the positive impact of the NYSC. Keep up the good work, and I am confident you will continue to take the scheme to greater heights,” he said.

The GOC reaffirmed the commitment of the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army to ensuring the safety and security of corps members serving within its area of responsibility at all times.
