The Tinubu Media Volunteers, TMV, has commended the Federal Government’s approval of the payment of N39bn pension arrears owed to former workers of the defunct Nigerian Telecommunications Limited, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria and other retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme.
The group described the settlement as a historic intervention, noting that the outstanding pension liabilities had remained unpaid for over two decades.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, the group said the payment would bring relief to thousands of pensioners who had endured years of hardship due to the non-payment of their entitlements.

According to the statement, the payment also covers pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme.
“We note that the non-payment of the pensions had over the years subjected the pensioners to untold hardship. It is acknowledged that the payment will also cover pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme,” the group said.
It described the backlog of pension arrears as a longstanding concern that had not only affected retirees and their families but had also constituted an embarrassment to the country.
The TMV maintained that workers who dedicated their productive years to national service deserved to receive their retirement benefits promptly, adding that timely payment of pensions would encourage future generations to contribute meaningfully to national development.
The group further stated that the approval reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to workers’ welfare and the protection of the dignity of labour.
It added that the payment underscored the Tinubu administration’s resolve to ensure that pensioners receive their entitlements without undue delay.
The statement noted that a significant portion of the pension liabilities was inherited by the current administration, stressing that the settlement aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“It is further noted that much of the pension arrears were inherited by the present administration and, in the spirit of the Renewed Hope Agenda, all outstanding pension arrears are being settled, thereby bringing a new lease of life to public service,” the statement added.
