The Tinubu Media Volunteers, TMV have commended the Federal Government for reportedly clearing pension arrears amounting to about N758bn owed to 957,045 retirees.

The group said the payment addressed outstanding pension obligations dating back to 2007 and represented a significant step towards improving the welfare of retired federal workers.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, TMV said the Bola Tinubu administration had taken steps to settle inherited pension liabilities and address challenges associated with pension administration.

The group described the payment as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations to retired workers who served the country in different capacities.

It said, “Despite the huge backlog of pension arrears inherited by the President Bola Tinubu administration, it has chosen to offset them and also put other measures in place to alleviate the problems associated with pension payment and administration in the country.”

TMV added that the payment would bring relief to retirees who had waited for years to receive their outstanding benefits.

According to the group, the settlement represents an important intervention in addressing the longstanding problem of delayed pension payments across successive administrations.

It said the move was consistent with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and demonstrated its determination to improve the welfare of former public servants.

“Definitely, a labourer deserves his wages either in or out of service, as this is the only way the Federal Government can compensate them for rendering service to their fatherland,” the statement added.

The group maintained that settling the arrears was part of broader institutional and economic reforms being pursued by the Tinubu administration.

It also commended the National Pension Commission for introducing the Zero Waiting Time Policy, aimed at reducing delays in pension processing and payments.

TMV said the commission’s efforts to expand pension awareness, improve stakeholder engagement and promote the effective implementation of the country’s pension policy deserved recognition.

It urged continued collaboration among relevant institutions and industry stakeholders to ensure that retirees received their benefits promptly.

The group said sustained improvements in pension administration would help restore confidence in the system and prevent the accumulation of similar arrears in the future.

It added that timely payment of retirement benefits was essential to protecting the dignity of workers after years of service to the country.
