Dr. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe, the former Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, has issued a passionate call to action for the descendants of the Ilorin Emirate living in the diaspora to actively promote and preserve the Emirate’s rich cultural heritage for future generations.
This compelling plea was made on November 30, 2024, during the 2nd Biennial Convention of the United States Branch of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressives Union (IEDPU), held at the Best Western Plus Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland.
Gracing the event as the Distinguished Special Guest of Honour, Oloriegbe underscored the importance of ensuring that younger generations born abroad remain deeply connected to the ideals and cultural identity of the Ilorin Emirate.

He emphasized the necessity of leveraging modern technology and engaging knowledgeable resource persons to teach essential cultural values, including Islamic teachings and the Ilorin dialect, in ways that resonate with contemporary youth.
He highlighted the unique attributes of Ilorin’s heritage, stressing the critical need to preserve and promote these values.
Drawing from his previous experience as a former National Treasurer of the IEDPU, Oloriegbe challenged the leadership of the Union in the United States to spearhead initiatives that encourage members to invest transparently in acquiring properties in Nigeria. These properties could serve as cultural and familial hubs during visits to their homeland.
In a heartfelt acknowledgement of the Union members’ hospitality and patriotism, he reiterated his unwavering commitment to supporting the Union’s mission of fostering growth and development within the Ilorin Emirate Community.
The convention, themed “Empowerment Through Solidarity: Focusing on Collective and Collaborative Efforts,” featured a keynote address by Ambassador Isiaka Abdulkadir Imam.
In his address, Ambassador Imam explored how unity and collaboration among the Ilorin Emirate descendants can foster sustainable empowerment and development for the community.
A thought-provoking lecture was delivered by Dr. Abdulmumin Yinka Ajia, who delved into the dynamics of preserving cultural heritage in a rapidly globalizing world.
He also proposed practical strategies for engaging the younger generation and fostering community development initiatives.
The event, chaired by the Dan-Iya of Ilorin Emirate, Engr. Suleiman Bolakale Kawu Agaka ably represented by Alh. Sharafadeen Alabelewe celebrated the Emirate’s vibrant culture through an exhibition of traditional dances such as Kengbe and Waka music.
Another cultural highlight was the reenactment of the Ilorin Emirate Palace procession, showcasing the rich history and regal traditions of the Emirate.
Also as part of the proceedings, Distinguished Service To Humanity Award was presented to Senator Oloriegbe as several other deserving individuals who have contributed significantly to the Ilorin Emirate and the Union’s objectives were also honoured.
The recognition served to inspire other members to remain dedicated to the Union’s vision.
The convention attracted a diverse assembly of Ilorin indigenes from various states across the U.S. and beyond.
It served as a platform for strengthening bonds, celebrating cultural identity, and reinforcing the shared vision of unity and progress for the Ilorin Emirate Community.
