Political Stakeholders Stress Zoning, Competence at ASKOMP Kwara Roundtable

Political leaders in Kwara State have emphasised the need for zoning and competent leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The discussion took place during the maiden media roundtable organised by the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) on Friday at the NUJ Press Centre, Ilorin.

Dr. Ibrahim Ogirima Salawu, Acting Director of the KWASU Centre for Politics and Corporate Governance, described zoning as a principle rooted in natural justice, ensuring that all senatorial districts have access to political leadership.

He said zoning strengthens democracy, promotes inclusivity, and fosters stability.

Salawu, however, warned that zoning must not override competent leadership.

“If zoning fails to produce capable and credible candidates, it should not be upheld at the expense of good governance,” he stressed.

Speaking at the event, Alhaji Babatunde Abdulwaheed, APC Publicity Secretary, commended ASKOMP for organising the roundtable and encouraged journalists to follow the advice of the speakers, stressing that credibility and reliability should remain the cornerstone of journalism.

He, therefore, attributed recent surge in defections to the ruling party in the state to the performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in policy implementation and governance.

He said the APC remains strong and that new entrants are expected to adhere to the party’s constitution and values.

Similarly, Mallam Abdulrasheed Gbagba, ADC Publicity Secretary in Kwara State, said the state and Nigeria were witnessing a new political awakening.

He assured that the ADC would present credible and competent candidates for the 2027 elections and expressed optimism about a new political trajectory for the country.
