TDF Applauds Tinubu Over Swift Implementation of ASUU Agreement

The Democratic Front, TDF has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as the speedy implementation of key components of the renegotiated agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, on Monday, the group said the development would usher in a new era of stability and harmony in Nigeria’s public universities.

The group specifically lauded the implementation of the 40 per cent increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance for university lecturers, noting that the move demonstrated the President’s commitment to advancing the course of education in the country.

It stated, “We commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the speedy implementation of key welfare components of the renegotiated agreement between his government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

“The implementation of the 40 per cent increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance for university lecturers, after reaching an agreement a few months ago with the academic union, shows President Tinubu’s passion to advance the course of education in Nigeria and his avowed commitment to maintain his enviable track record of fulfilling his campaign promises.”

The Democratic Front described Tinubu as a consistent leader who delivers on his promises, adding that it receives every pledge made by the President with optimism.

According to the group, the swift execution of the agreement marks a departure from what lecturers had experienced in the past, particularly with regard to delays in salary payments and other emoluments.

“For decades, Nigeria has laboured under the agony of persistent neglect and disruption of its university education system on account of the lack of prompt payment of salaries and deserving emoluments to university lecturers,” the statement read.

“But with the swift implementation of the renegotiated agreement between ASUU and the Tinubu administration, the outlook for uninterrupted academic sessions in Nigerian universities is brighter.”

The group lamented that frequent industrial actions by ASUU over the last four decades had significantly disrupted academic calendars and undermined the potential of Nigerian universities.

It added that the prolonged strikes had forced many Nigerian parents to send their children abroad for studies, thereby putting pressure on the nation’s foreign exchange reserves.

“In the first half of 2025 alone, approximately $1.39bn, roughly N2.16tn, was spent on foreign education by Nigerian parents and students. Scarce foreign exchange that ought to have been conserved for internal socio-economic use and consolidation was expended on payment of foreign school fees,” the group stated.

TDF expressed optimism that the new government–ASUU relationship would ensure that academic programmes run their full course without disruption.

“Under this new order of Government-ASUU relationship, we anticipate that a four-year duration course in a public university, which sometimes takes seven years to complete, will now take exactly four years to conclude due to harmony and stability in the nation’s academic curriculum,” it added.

The group further said it was convinced that the implementation of the agreement would motivate lecturers to redouble their efforts toward improving the quality of education in public universities.

It, however, appealed to Nigerians to continue supporting the President in his efforts to reposition the country and restore confidence in the nation’s higher education system.
