Chrisland Faces Manslaughter, Negligent Charges Over Death of 12-Year-Old Student

The Lagos State government has announced its intention to prosecute Chrisland School, Ikeja, over the death of 12-year-old student Whitney Adeniran, who died from electrocution during an inter-house sports event.
The intent was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Grace Alo, on Friday,
The government alleges involuntary manslaughter, reckless and negligent acts on the part of the school.

The case, according to Alo, was investigated by the Nigerian Police with assistance from other agencies and subsequently referred to the Department of Public Prosecution for review of the duplicate case file., adding that on March 23, the DPP issued its legal advice and determined that a prima facie case had been established against the school.
The statement added that the school’s staff and one vendor will be charged with offences under sections 224 and 251 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015. The legal advice is available on the Ministry of Justice website.
Recall that on February 9, Whitney Adeniran collapsed during an inter-house sports event organised by the school and was rushed to Agege Central Hospital, where she was confirmed “brought in dead” by the doctor on duty.
The post-mortem report from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital stated that the cause of death was asphyxia and electrocution.
