China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, has called on warring parties in Sudan to promptly end hostilities, citing the recent eruption of armed conflict in the country as causing massive civilian casualties and infrastructure destruction.
Speaking at a Security Council meeting on Sudan, Zhang expressed China’s concern over Sudan’s relapse into turmoil, and urged both parties to put the interests of the country and people first by ending hostilities promptly and avoiding further escalation of the situation.
He expressed hope that the humanitarian truce would hold, and that civilians, foreign institutions, personnel, and diplomatic missions in the country would be protected.

Zhang also emphasised the need for security and logistics support for humanitarian aid and personnel evacuation and relocation.
Highlighting Sudan’s importance as a country in the Horn of Africa, Zhang warned that if the current conflict drags on and escalates, there will undoubtedly be a higher spillover risk that would harm regional peace and security.
He urged both parties to solve their differences and divergences through dialogue and bring the political process, social economic development, and social order back on track.
According to Zhang, the cause of the current turmoil in Sudan deserves serious reflection, and the international community should respect Sudan’s sovereignty, ownership, and support the country in exploring institutional arrangements in line with its national conditions.
He cautioned against imposing a solution from the outside or arbitrarily setting up a timetable, as this is likely to be counterproductive.
Zhang firmly expressed China’s support for Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and expressed the hope that the conflict would end at an early date, enabling Sudan to return to the right track of peace, stability, and national development.
