The Defence Headquarters, DHQ has dismissed insinuations that the ongoing investigation of sixteen officers in the Armed Forces is linked to an alleged coup attempt, describing the claims as false, malicious, and aimed at sowing discord among Nigerians.

The military high command stated this in a release on Saturday signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau.

According to the statement, the ongoing internal probe involving the officers is a routine disciplinary process, not connected to any political activity or plot against the government.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to categorically state that the claims by the said publication are entirely false, malicious, and intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among the populace,” the statement said.

Gusau explained that the investigation is part of the institution’s commitment to maintaining discipline and professionalism among personnel.

He added that a duly constituted investigative panel is already handling the matter, and its findings will be made public when concluded.

“The ongoing investigation involving the sixteen officers is a routine internal process aimed at ensuring discipline and professionalism is maintained within the ranks,” the statement clarified.

The DHQ also took a swipe at an online platform that linked the disciplinary process to the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, calling such reports reckless and misleading.

It explained that the parade was called off to allow President Bola Tinubu attend a strategic bilateral engagement abroad and to enable the military sustain its operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry across the country.

Reaffirming the military’s loyalty to democratic governance, Gusau urged the public to disregard the rumour and continue to support the Armed Forces in its constitutional duties.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Federal Government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” he said.

The DHQ further assured that the military, in collaboration with other arms of government, remains focused on safeguarding the unity, peace, and stability of the nation.

“The Federal Government, the legislature, and the judiciary are working closely for the safety, development, and well-being of the nation. Democracy is forever,” the statement added.
