DHQ Honours Veterans, Fallen Heroes at 2026 Remembrance Day Golf Kitty

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Saturday honoured military veterans and fallen heroes as it marked the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day with a golf tournament at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club, Yar’Adua Barracks, Asokoro, Abuja.
The event, organised by the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), formed part of nationwide activities to commemorate serving personnel, wounded troops, veterans and officers and men who paid the supreme sacrifice in the defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), described the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day as a solemn national occasion dedicated to recognising the courage, dedication and selfless service of members of the Nigerian military.

He said the annual commemoration provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of the Armed Forces in the maintenance of peace, unity and security across the country.
General Musa noted that sporting activities such as golf align with the military’s emphasis on physical fitness, mental alertness and resilience, adding that the tournament also created an avenue for interaction and bonding among personnel.
According to him, such engagements help to strengthen esprit de corps and promote unity within the Armed Forces community.
The defence minister commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his continued support and commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the military.
He also praised the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) for his leadership and dedication to national service.
In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, expressed appreciation to officers and men of the Armed Forces for their professionalism and sacrifices in ongoing operations across the country.
General Oluyede said the Armed Forces remain central to the maintenance of peace and stability in Nigeria, stressing that the Remembrance Day offers an opportunity to honour the bravery and patriotism of military personnel, past and present.
He thanked Nigerians for their continued support of the Armed Forces and emphasised that security is a collective responsibility, calling for stronger civil-military cooperation and sustained national unity.
Also speaking, the Captain of the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club, Brigadier General Nicholas Ashinze, said the club was honoured to host the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Golf Kitty.
He disclosed that over 100 golfers participated in the tournament and thanked the Chief of Defence Staff for his presence and support.
The event featured the presentation of awards and prizes to outstanding golfers, alongside souvenirs and group photographs, bringing the celebration to a close in honour of Nigeria’s veterans, serving personnel and fallen heroes.
