Govt Clears Air on Selling Kwara Hotel
By Alabidun Shuaib AbdulRahman
The Kwara State Government has affirmed that Kwara Hotel, a cherished public legacy, will not be sold under any circumstances. Instead, the historic property is set to undergo a substantial reconstruction and efficient management, aiming to restore it to its former glory.
The claim was contained in a statement by the Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology (BIT), Hon. Damilola Yusuf on Friday in Ilorin.
Yusuf disclosed that the comprehensive bidding process commenced over two months ago, with advertisements published in various newspapers, including the Herald on September 8, 2023, and the Tribune on October 18, 2023.

The open bidding phase, according to the Commissioner, has concluded, and the cabinet is poised to review and approve a successful company entrusted with the responsibility to finance, remodel, and reconstruct the hotel on behalf of the state.
Emphasizing a commitment to retaining the iconic outward stature bestowed by Kwara State’s founding fathers, the government assures the public that the terms of reconstruction will never include the sale of the property.
The reconstruction project aims to bring the facility up to contemporary standards while preserving its historical significance.
The announcement highlights that Kwara Hotel’s last significant renovation occurred over two decades ago, and with time, the facility’s infrastructure has become obsolete.
He added that as part of the preparatory steps, the government initiated a legal process weeks ago to auction off spent items and utilities from the hotel, involving approved auctioneers and adherence to due valuation processes.
Currently, four registered auctioneers have been authorized to facilitate the auctioning of these items to the general public. This endeavor serves to clear out the facility for the impending massive construction works, scheduled to commence shortly.
Yusuf said the ongoing auction is conducted openly to avoid any potential stampede, with the police deployed to maintain law and order and deter opportunistic behavior.
The public is assured of the government’s unwavering commitment to revitalizing Kwara Hotel, envisioning it as a source of pride for the people once again.
