The Inmates Educational Foundation (IEF) has organised educational seminars for inmates in selected correctional centres in Osun and Ebonyi states, in a move aimed at strengthening learning opportunities and supporting the rehabilitation of incarcerated persons.
The seminars, which formed part of the Foundation’s education intervention, brought together inmates, volunteer teachers and correctional officers for interactive sessions on literacy, personal development and academic improvement.
According to the organisation, the programme is designed to equip inmates with relevant knowledge and skills that will enhance their personal growth and prepare them for life after incarceration.

As part of the initiative, the Foundation distributed educational materials, including notebooks, textbooks, writing materials and instructional aids, to improve the teaching and learning environment within the facilities and encourage active participation by inmates.
Speaking on the initiative, the Team Lead of the Inmates Educational Foundation (IMF), Alabidun Mahfuz, said sustained access to education remains key to effective rehabilitation in correctional centres.
“Education remains one of the most effective tools for rehabilitation. Our activities in Osun and Ebonyi states underscore our commitment to ensuring that inmates are not cut off from learning opportunities that can help them build a better future,” he said.
Also speaking, the Project Manager, Adebowale Abdul-Ghaffar Adeniran, stressed the importance of collaboration and structured learning in achieving long-term impact.
“Access to educational resources and structured learning opportunities helps to improve inmates’ confidence, behaviour and commitment to lifelong learning. We are determined to expand the programme and reach more correctional centres across the country,” Adeniran stated.
Officials of the correctional centres in the two states lauded the initiative, noting that continuous educational support has a positive effect on inmates’ mental development and overall rehabilitation process.
The project received funding support from the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund, which supports youth-focused development and social impact initiatives across Nigeria.
The Inmates Educational Foundation said it would extend similar educational programmes to other states, to ensure that more inmates benefit from inclusive and transformative education aimed at reducing recidivism and promoting successful reintegration into society.
