Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has directed the State Emergency Management Agency to mobilise relief materials and support for victims of the deadly terrorist attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.

The governor gave the directive in the early hours of Thursday, shortly after visiting the affected community where he commiserated with survivors, the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Sheu Omar, and residents of the emirate over the incident.

The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, claimed the lives of no fewer than 75 residents of the predominantly Muslim community, while several houses and other properties were destroyed.

Ahead of the visit to Woro, AbdulRazaq arrived in Kaiama on Wednesday night in the company of the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Salihu Yakubu-Danladi, security commanders and senior government officials.

He was received by the Emir of Kaiama, the Head of Woro, Alhaji Saliu Bio Umar, and other traditional chiefs.

Speaking with journalists after receiving security briefings, the governor described the attack as a massacre, noting that the victims were allegedly targeted for rejecting a strange religious ideology.

“We are very sad. We are here to commiserate with Your Royal Highness over the killing of 75 of your subjects. May Allah grant them Al-Jannah Firdaus,” AbdulRazaq said at the Emir’s Palace.

He announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved the immediate deployment of troops to the area under Operation Savannah Shield to restore peace and forestall further attacks.

The governor added that emergency officials would begin enumeration of affected families to determine the level of support required.

“At the moment, the state emergency services will be on the ground to assess the situation and take care of the victims’ families,” he said.

AbdulRazaq commended security agencies for their ongoing operations across the state, saying insecurity in Kwara South had been largely brought under control.

“This challenge goes beyond Kwara and extends to the Kainji Park axis in Niger State. Within the next one month, the area will be flooded with soldiers, and we are confident that the outcome will be positive,” he added.

In his response, the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Sheu Omar, said the attackers were followers of one Mahmuda, who preached an extremist ideology and attacked those who rejected it.

He thanked the governor for his swift intervention and reassurance.

“What happened in Woro was very unfortunate, and we lost many people. Your Excellency’s visit has given us hope and a sense of belonging,” the Emir said.
