Lagos: Makoko Residents Express Agony as Fire Razes 50 Shops, Buildings

The residents of Makoko Community in Lagos have expressed agony, following the fire incident that razed about 50 shops and buildings for two days in the area.

Our reporter was told that the horrible incident started on Tuesday night and extended to Wednesday inextinguished, the situation, according to a source, “Rendered residents of the affected area homeless”.

Some affected victims narrated their ordeals, saying they stayed helplessly under the rain on the said night leaving them to their fates as they have nowhere to stay under.

“Our houses were gutted by fire. We have no house now,” one of the victims soberly narrated.

He further stated that: “When it rains, we have difficulty as most of us are accommodated by relatives and friends.

“We want the government to help us”.

Responding, the chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Association, Kayode Omiyale, confirmed the ugly incident on Friday.

He, however, attributed the cause of the fire to an electrical spark, noting that no life was lost in the incident that started late on Tuesday and extended to Wednesday morning

Omiyale sympathised with victims of the inferno, adding that a relief committee had already been set up.

“We should cultivate the habit of switching off electrical appliances during a power outage. If this had been done, we may not be here on this note,” he said.

He further urged the resident to try as much as possible to have lesser electrical appliances plugged in a power extension box that is not wired for much capacity, noting “They can’t be too careful on safety and security of life and property.”
