Fuel Scarcity: NBA Calls for Sanctions Against Saboteurs of Dangote Refinery
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s directive for the supply of crude to Dangote Refinery and modular refineries across the country.
Speaking during a visit to the facility in Lekki, Lagos State, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau described the establishment of the refinery as a “nationalistic and patriotic endeavour” that deserves support from the Federal Government and Nigerians.
Maikyau lamented the opposition faced by the refinery from fuel importers, who have stifled the economy and kept it reliant on imported refined petroleum products despite Nigeria’s status as a leading crude oil producer.

He praised Aliko Dangote, President/Chief Executive of the Dangote Group, for his steadfastness and resilience in the face of opposition, describing him as a “freedom fighter and economic warrior.”
The NBA President called on the Federal Government to create a supportive environment for the refinery to operate, stressing that it has the potential to transform Nigeria into a net exporter of refined petroleum products and alleviate fuel scarcity.
Vice Chairman of the Epe Branch of the NBA, Ivo Takor, praised the location of the refinery and its potential to resolve long-standing issues of fuel importation, create jobs, boost foreign exchange, and save the country money spent on subsidizing petroleum products.
However, he noted that entrenched cartels are working against the full operation of the refinery, and emphasized the need for stringent monitoring to ensure compliance with the presidential directive on crude supply.
The Dangote Industries Limited Vice President (Oil & Gas), Devakumar Edwin, said the refinery was established to source and refine local crudes for Nigeria’s benefit while exporting excess production to boost the economy.
