NIMC Raises Alarm Over EFCC’s Claim on Nigerians Selling Personal Info

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has expressed serious concern over a recent statement attributed to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) alleging that Nigerians are selling their personal information, including National Identification Numbers (NIN), for financial gain.
INCNews247 reports that EFCC had earlier hinted that young Nigerians are offering to buy personal information from victims for between N1,500 and N2,000 and selling same to Fintech institutions for about N5,000.
The NIMC has described this development as a serious security concern with grave consequences for NIN holders.

The Commission clarified that it will not be held responsible for any personal information shared by individuals directly or by proxy for financial gain or inducement.
Recalls that NIMC has repeatedly warned Nigerians against disclosing their NIN to unauthorized individuals or organizations.
The Commission, therefore, reminded service providers that any NIN presented to access services must be duly verified before granting such services.
It further said to enhance security and protection of NIN, the general public is advised to download the NINAuth App on either Apple iOS or Google Play Store, noting the app provides several benefits, including control over personal information and protection against unauthorized access.
