The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC has arrested several suspects over alleged illegal National Identification Number enrolment, unauthorised data modification and extortion during an enforcement operation in Gwagwalada and other locations.
The commission also said its Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit seized equipment allegedly used for illegal NIN enrolment during the operation.
NIMC disclosed this in a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, on October 30, 2026.
It said the operation was part of efforts to eliminate unauthorised enrolment activities and unethical practices capable of undermining the integrity, security and credibility of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.

The commission warned that many challenges encountered by NIN holders resulted from attempts to bypass approved enrolment procedures and patronise unauthorised operators.
It stressed that NIN enrolment could only be conducted at NIMC-approved centres, while modifications to personal information should be carried out through its official self-service modification platform.
The commission also advised NIN holders to download the NINAuth application from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to enhance the security of their identification numbers.
According to NIMC, the application provides security benefits and enables users to access services, including NIN slip printing.
The Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated the commission’s zero tolerance for extortion and other unethical practices, assuring Nigerians and legal residents of its commitment to providing seamless NIN enrolment services.
She urged applicants and existing NIN holders to use only approved channels for enrolment and other identity management services.
NIMC advised members of the public to visit its website, www.nimc.gov.ng, or follow its verified social media platforms for accurate information.
It also provided a toll-free line, 0800 0616 462, for enquiries and complaints.
