The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC is set to launch special identity cards for senior citizens above 60 years and vulnerable individuals in Nigeria.

According to Peter Iwegbu, Director Card Management Services Department of NIMC, the commission is working with the Senior Citizens Centre to make this initiative a reality.

The special card for senior citizens, expected to launch in the first quarter of 2025, will grant them access to unique services and special privileges.

Additionally, NIMC is collaborating with about 20 agencies and stakeholders to create another card for vulnerable individuals, aiming to ease palliatives distribution when needed by the government.

Iwegbu revealed this during a two-day workshop with Publishers of Online Newspapers in Abuja.

The card will be a single multipurpose card (GMPC) that can be used for payments, government services, travel, and more.

Recall that the Director General/CEO of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has addressed challenges that previously stalled card issuance since assuming office a year ago.

Although it was reported that there are 2 million processed cards awaiting collection by Nigerians across the country.

Iwegbu attributed this to some individuals not requesting cards, relocation, or changes in registration details.

On the issue of fraudulent activities within NIMC, Iwegbu assured that the commission conducts thorough security checks on employees and has mechanisms in place to address any wrongdoing.

In his remarks, Akwitti O. Akwitti, Assistant Director, Operations Dept of NIMC, disclosed that Nigeria has approximately 5.8 million senior citizens, with 2.3 million females and 3.5 million males, remarking that this figure is constantly growing and NIMC is ever ready to cater for all.

INCNews247 reports that under Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote’s leadership, NIMC has achieved significant milestones, including the restoration of outdated systems, introduction of new nationwide systems, and renovation of offices to include biometrics.

A robust customer care service has also been established to respond promptly to enquiries on social media platforms and others.
