Path to Peace Foundation has unveiled The Abuja Project: Empowering Communities for Grassroots Impact, an initiative targeted at strengthening accountability and participatory governance in the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The organisation said the programme, supported by the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund, became necessary in the wake of the Supreme Court’s July 11, 2024 judgement, which restored financial and administrative autonomy to local governments across Nigeria.
In a statement signed by its Communications Officer, Ms. Fareedah Omiyale and obtained by INCNews247, the Foundation expressed concern that despite their constitutional role in rural development, local councils in Abuja continue to exclude citizens from decision-making, thereby weakening governance and leaving community needs unmet.

Omiyale noted that the Abuja Project seeks to reverse this trend. “Our goal is to bridge the gap between the Area Councils and the people they serve. With autonomy now a reality, accountability has become a critical factor in quality governance. The Abuja Project will create platforms for dialogue, advocacy and citizen engagement to make councils more responsive,” she said.
She added that the initiative would feature fellowship programmes, town hall meetings, evidence-based research and advocacy campaigns aimed at promoting transparency, efficiency and grassroots empowerment.
Omiyale expressed optimism that the Abuja Project would not only improve governance in the FCT Area Councils but also serve as a model for other states to adopt in strengthening local government administration.
