A Muslim cleric, Dr Abdulhakeem Bello, has called on Muslims to embrace unity and selflessness as essential virtues for societal progress.
Bello made the call on Saturday in Abuja while delivering a sermon during the second edition of the Ramadan Food Support programme organised by the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union, IEDPU FCT.
Speaking as the guest lecturer, the cleric emphasised that genuine progress within the Muslim community and the wider society could only be achieved when individuals prioritise collective interest above personal gain.

According to him, selflessness remains a key driver of development, warning that selfishness and disunity often hinder meaningful progress among people.
“If we truly want to succeed as a people and as a community, we must remain united and learn to prioritise the wellbeing of others. Selflessness is the foundation upon which lasting progress is built,” he said.
Bello also described the holy month of Ramadan as a period that encourages unity among Muslims irrespective of tribe, ethnicity or geographical background.
He noted that the spiritual lessons embedded in fasting promote compassion, strengthen communal bonds and encourage believers to support one another.
Quoting the Qur’an, Bello referenced Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10) which states, “The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.”
He also cited Surah Aal-Imran (3:103), which urges Muslims to remain united, saying, “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.”
Drawing lessons from nature, the cleric likened the need for unity among Muslims to the behaviour of ants when searching for food.
He explained that ants demonstrate remarkable cooperation and coordination in gathering sustenance, noting that humans, who possess intellect and divine guidance, should exhibit even stronger unity.
“Look at ants when they are searching for food; they move together with a common purpose. That is a powerful lesson for us as humans. If such tiny creatures can unite for survival, then we as believers should do even more for the sake of progress and harmony,” Bello added.
He urged Muslims to use the Ramadan period to strengthen relationships, support the less privileged and promote peace within their communities.
