Troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria have intercepted a large consignment of explosive materials along the Eruku–Egbe road in Kwara State.

The Defence Headquarters disclosed this on Friday while providing an update on ongoing military operations across various theatres in the country.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said the operation was carried out by troops under Operation Savannah Shield during intensified security patrols in the North-Central region.

According to him, troops stopped and searched a suspicious vehicle along the Eruku–Egbe road in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State on the 28th of February, leading to the discovery of eight 50kg bags of ammonium chloride.

He said the driver of the vehicle failed to present any authorization for transporting the substance.

Onoja added that laboratory analysis later confirmed the material as ammonium chloride, a chemical substance commonly used as a precursor in the production of improvised explosive devices.

“The driver and the recovered substances are currently in custody pending further investigation and appropriate legal action,” he said.

The military said the interception formed part of ongoing intelligence-driven operations aimed at preventing terrorists and other criminal groups from acquiring materials used to manufacture explosives.
