The Federal Government has emphasized the need for a new and innovative financing model for Hajj pilgrimage to make it more accessible to Nigerians.
This call was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the second National Hajj Stakeholders’ Summit held today in Abuja.
Shettima, represented by Barrister Bashir Maidugu, noted that the rising costs of Hajj, coupled with economic challenges and global uncertainties, necessitate the development of a system that ensures affordability for pilgrims without compromising the quality of service.
The Vice President cited the success stories of Malaysia’s Tabung Hajj and Indonesia’s Hajj funds management authority, which have demonstrated effective management of Hajj funds and enhanced pilgrim experience.
He outlined that these models have not only ensured financial sustainability but also contributed to the economic development of the respective countries.
Shettima urged stakeholders to develop working models for the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria’s (NAHCON) Hajj Savings Scheme (HSS) to create a robust and efficient Hajj finance system.
He emphasized the importance of leveraging best practices from other countries to improve the Hajj experience for Nigerian pilgrims.
