TCN faults EKEDC over Lekki outage, denies transformer trip

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN has faulted the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, EKEDC over its report on the power outage affecting parts of its franchise area, denying claims that a TCN transformer at the Lekki Transmission Substation tripped unexpectedly.
The TCN, in a statement signed by its management on Thursday, said the publication by EKEDC on August 26, 2026, contained misinformation regarding the incident at the Lekki Transmission Substation.
According to the transmission company, the incident involved the simultaneous tripping of EKEDC’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders at about 4:34am on August 26 due to overcurrent and earth fault.

It explained that the fault resulted in the inter-tripping of the primary and secondary breakers of its TR1 60MVA, 132/33kV transformer, accompanied by a heavy bang and smoke.
The company said its maintenance crew immediately responded to the incident and rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker, while both the primary and secondary breakers were restored later the same day.
However, TCN said the problem resurfaced after EKEDC attempted a trial closure of its Oniru feeder.
“The same relay indications caused another trip, necessitating further corrective work,” the statement said.
TCN specifically denied EKEDC’s claim that its T11 transformer had tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection.
“No outage occurred on TCN’s T11 transformer as claimed by EKEDC,” it stated.
The transmission company maintained that the incident was strictly related to EKEDC’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders, adding that its technical team remained on site to address the fault and restore electricity supply.
“TCN’s technical team has been on-site, working assiduously to restore supply within the shortest possible time,” the statement added.
The company apologised to electricity consumers affected by the incident, while reiterating its commitment to strengthening the transmission network.
“TCN assures electricity customers impacted by the incident that we are actively addressing the fault caused by the DisCo’s feeders and regrets any inconvenience caused.
“We are committed to working assiduously to put in place a more robust transmission network,” it stated.
