ACOE Advocates for Press Freedom in Nigeria

As World Press Freedom is being celebrated across the globe, the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) has reiterated the imperative of press freedom in Nigeria, asserting that journalism serves as a vital force in advancing environmental agendas.
It added that it serves as a catalyst for change, a guardian for accountability, and a voice for marginalized communities.
In a statement issued by the Acting President, Martin Odiete, and the Acting Secretary, Omosola Akingboye on May 3rd, the organization urged the Government to ensure the protection of journalists’ rights, safety, and security nationwide.

ACOE acknowledged the significant challenges journalists encounter in fulfilling their essential duties, noting that as environmental advocates, journalists often confront intimidation, harassment, and violence for their courageous endeavors to expose societal injustices and safeguard the environment.
Addressing this year’s theme, “A Press For the Planet: Journalism in the Face of Environmental Crisis,” the Association emphasized that through investigative reporting, insightful analysis, and compelling storytelling, journalists illuminate the critical environmental issues confronting the nation, motivating collective action towards positive change.
ACOE, therefore, appealed to the government to reaffirm its dedication to the principles of a free and independent press, emphasizing the indispensable role of climate journalism in promoting transparency, accountability, and social justice, and in effectively communicating the urgency of the climate crisis to facilitate informed decision-making for responsible action.
