As President Bola Tinubu marks his first year in office, the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) has released a comprehensive public perception poll reflecting a nation deeply divided on his performance.

The poll indicates that a significant majority of Nigerians (68%) do not view President Tinubu’s first year as successful, with 42% categorizing his tenure as a major failure.

However, there remains a notable segment (47%) of the population that holds a positive outlook, believing that the future holds promise under his leadership.

Furthermore, 8.1% of respondents express strong trust that President Tinubu will lead Nigeria out of its current challenges, while 10% have a moderate level of trust, and 16.2% remain neutral. On the flip side, 29.5% distrust his leadership, with 36.2% expressing strong distrust.

Economic management under President Tinubu has been a major point of contention. A striking 78% of Nigerians are dissatisfied with his handling of the economy, with 44% reporting they are very dissatisfied. Only 8.6% of respondents feel satisfied with the economic policies implemented thus far, and 9% remain neutral.

National Security and Crime

Security remains a critical issue for many Nigerians, with only 19% believing that President Tinubu has effectively improved national security and reduced crime. A mere 5% report that he has exceeded their expectations. In stark contrast, 62% believe he has fallen short, with 31% describing his security strategy as very ineffective.

Corruption and Governance

The fight against corruption and the promotion of good governance are areas where President Tinubu faces significant criticism. A majority, 71%, view his efforts as unsuccessful, with 32% deeming them very unsuccessful. Conversely, 12% believe he has been successful in these areas, and 13% are neutral.

Health Care and Education

Health care under President Tinubu’s administration has been rated poorly, with 63% of respondents expressing dissatisfaction, including 32% rating his performance as very poor. In education, 64% of Nigerians feel the sector has worsened, with only 13% seeing any improvement.

Infrastructure Development

Infrastructure development is another area where President Tinubu has struggled to win public approval. A majority (64%) are dissatisfied with the progress made in infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and water supply. Sixteen percent of respondents are unsure about the administration’s impact in this sector.

Job Creation and Unemployment

Job creation efforts have been particularly disappointing for many Nigerians. Seventy-seven percent of respondents rate President Tinubu’s performance in creating job opportunities as poor, with 43% stating unemployment has worsened significantly under his leadership.

Foreign Policy and Communication

Foreign policy has also been a contentious area, with 57% of Nigerians believing it has deteriorated since President Tinubu took office. Additionally, the president’s communication and transparency have been criticized, with 57% perceiving his communication as opaque.

Handling of Subsidy Removal

The removal of subsidies and the handling of its aftermath have been poorly received. Seventy-six percent of Nigerians rate the president’s handling of subsidy removal as inadequate, with 47% describing it as very poor.

Demographic Insights

The poll reveals that the impact of President Tinubu’s administration is felt most acutely by adults aged 40-69 (72%), followed by those aged 18-39 (25%). Interestingly, male adults (86%) report a greater impact from the president’s policies compared to female adults (14%).

The Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) poll, conducted between May 22-26, 2024, surveyed 1,055 adults across Nigeria’s 36 states with a margin of error of +/- 5 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.

Respondents were randomly selected from various social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
