Dollar Tapes: Kano Governor and his “Agbada” Dollar
By Umar Yunusa
A Governor, who came into government through deceit, was captured by Daily Nigerian publisher, Jaafar Jaafar for stuffing American-dollars in his Big-gown suspected to be bribe payment from public works contractors.
The video which was released by the Editor-in-Chief of Daily Nigerian, in 2018 generated a lot of reaction both at home and diaspora after the incumbent governor of Kano State was captured in a trending video at that times, stuffing money in his white “Agbada” cloth.
The governor, Abdullahi Ganduje Umar, who according to the paper requested $5 million from the contractors while handing in part of the payment as shown in the video.
He revealed earlier this year that “there is a plan to deal with whoever released video of his dollar. Does Nigeria respect journalists’ role?
In a country where journalists are threatening like this, it shows that “free press will not have adhered to soon”.
If a Governor can be seen in video stuffing dollars, why can’t he be investigated? He used his power as Governor or as Corrupted one rather in-country to threaten a great journo like Jaafar Jaafar.
The practice of journalism in this country is becoming what can’t be described. Let the court decides!
Daily Nigerian Publisher, Mr. Jaafar, who went to lie low after Armed Police stormed into his residence for criticizing the Kano State Government. Similarly, Sa’ida Saad Bugaje, a lawyer, has also become a fugitive following her condemnation of the state’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
This can be a wake-up for NUJ to protect journalists who strive hard to unveil corrupted politicians and host of them.
