FG Debunks Rumoured Foreign Military Base in Nigeria

By Roselyn James

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, called claims circulating in some quarters that the Nigerian government is thinking of setting up such a military camp in the nation “false” in a statement released on Monday.

The Federal Government is aware of unfounded rumors circulating in some circles that claim talks about the setting up of foreign military bases in Nigeria were held between the Federal Government of Nigeria and certain foreign nations.”We implore the public to completely reject this lie,” the minister declared.

Lately, a few northern politicians have written to President Bola Tinubu to warn him against accepting the French and American governments’ request to move their military bases from the Sahel to Nigeria. They claim that doing so would put Nigeria in danger.

“The Federal Government is not in any such discussion with any foreign country,” the minister of information stated in his statement. We have not received, nor are we contemplating, any suggestions regarding setting up of foreign military bases in Nigeria from any nation.

“To achieve the national security objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Nigerian government already benefits from foreign cooperation in addressing ongoing security challenges, and the President remains committed to deepening these partnerships.
