The Federal Government has approved an increase in the registration fee for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), raising the cost from ₦27,000 to ₦50,000 per candidate with effect from the 2027 examination cycle.
The new fee will apply to candidates sitting both the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council, (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), representing an increase of more than 85 per cent over the current registration cost.
The development is expected to have significant implications for parents, guardians and students preparing for the examinations, amid growing concerns over the rising cost of education in the country.

Education stakeholders said the review was necessitated by the increasing cost of conducting nationwide examinations, including logistics, security, printing of examination materials and other administrative expenses.
Government officials maintained that the upward review is aimed at sustaining the quality, credibility and smooth conduct of public examinations across the country.
However, the announcement has generated mixed reactions, with many parents and education advocates expressing concern that the increase could place an additional financial burden on low-income families already struggling with prevailing economic challenges.
Some education analysts have urged the Federal Government to introduce intervention measures, including subsidies and financial assistance for indigent students, to ensure that no qualified candidate is denied access to secondary school certification because of inability to pay the revised fee.
The new registration fee will take effect from the 2027 examination cycle, giving schools, parents and prospective candidates time to adjust to the new payment structure.
