Inferno Razes Goods Worth Millions in Onitsha Market

An early morning inferno has razed properties worth millions of naira in the plastic market at Amobi street, Onitsha, Anambra State.

The incident reported to have happened at midnight around 1.50 am on Friday, which affected one of the plazas in the market.

An witness recounted the losses but said no life was lost despite the devastating nature of the fire.

He said it was eventually stemmed due to the professional approach of the fire fighters and prompt reactiveness of the people in the market.

“No life was lost during the incident as the fire reportedly extinguished with the intervention of firefighters and people in the scene,” he emphasized.

Police spokesperson in Anambra, Haruna Mohammed while confirming the fire incdent, said furhter investigation has commenced to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mohammed confirmed the incident, saying Police operatives led by DPO, CPS Onitsha, SP Ifeanyi Iburu quickly mobilised to the scene and cordoned off the area to prevent looting and further catastrophe.

He added that, “Fire Service was equally contacted and they responded promptly. The fire was extinguished with the help of fire fighters and other sympathizers in the area.”

“No loss of life and no injury have been reported. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain extent of damage and circumstances surrounding the incident.”
