Edo State’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has been impeached by the Edo State House of Assembly during its plenary session in Benin City, the capital of Edo State on Monday.
The impeachment follows the acceptance of the report by a seven-member committee appointed by Chief Judge Daniel Okungbowa to investigate Shaibu’s alleged misconduct.
The impeachment process was initiated last week by the Edo House of Assembly, with twenty-one out of twenty-four lawmakers signing a petition in support.
INCNews247 reports Shaibu faced charges of perjury and disclosing confidential state government information.
The House Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku informed legislators during a plenary session last Tuesday that Shaibu had failed to respond to the impeachment notice served on him, citing his receipt of the notice on March 6, 2024.

Due to what was described as the Deputy Governor’s disregard of duty, the Edo House of Assembly ordered a substitute service, which was published by the Nigerian Observer and Vanguard Newspapers on March 12, 2024.
Following this, Charity Aiguobarueghan, the majority leader of the Edo House of Assembly, proposed a resolution requesting Justice Okungbowa to form a committee to investigate the petition against Shaibu.
