Troops conducting Exercise GOLDEN DAWN Sector 3 have foiled an attempted kidnap and robbery of Most Reverend Augustine Ukwuoma at the Orlu Diocesan Catholic Secretariat, BSC Road, Orlu Imo State.
Nigerian Army Spokesperson, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu made the disclosure in a statement on Sunday, noting that the troops responded quickly to a distress call at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 31, 2021, forcing the assailants to flee, abandoning their mission.
The Bishop, his Secretary, and his Assistant Secretary are unharmed, he added.
He underlined that troops will continue to deny members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra/Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) and other criminal gangs operating in the sector freedom of action, particularly as the elections in Anambra State approach and the yuletide season approaches.
He asked members of the public to always report suspicious criminal activity as well as IPOB/ESN hideouts to law enforcement agencies, claiming that the group is solely trying to intimidate, steal, and abduct law-abiding persons for ransom.
