Kwara LG Elections: A Threat to Democracy, Says Dr. Ajia

Dr. AbdulMumin Yinka Ajia, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and governorship candidate of the Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party in 2019, has expressed disappointment over the recent Local Government Elections in Kwara.

Ajia labelled the process “A Threat to Democracy” due to widespread reports of irregularities and lack of transparency.

He emphasized the importance of Local Government elections in advancing democratic principles and grassroots development.

However, he criticized the electoral body for undermining the will of the electorates. The election process was marred by significant electoral malpractice, voter suppression, and poorly managed polling units.

The unavailability of ballots disenfranchised eligible voters, undermining the legitimacy of the election results and leaving communities feeling unrepresented. Election observers reported irregularities, including tampered ballots and delayed results without clear explanations. Such irregularities create a dangerous precedent, weakening citizens’ faith in the democratic system.

Ajia stressed that democracy relies on the people’s power to choose leaders and hold them accountable. Local elections should be a vibrant expression of grassroots democracy, directly impacting citizens’ day-to-day lives through essential services like waste management, infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

The lack of accountability amongst self-imposed officials becomes more pronounced when elections are compromised. Leaders who come into office through questionable means often prioritize serving their interests over those of their constituents, breeding disillusionment with the democratic process and alienating citizens from meaningful participation.

Ajia called on the people of Kwara to demand accountability and transparency in how their finances would be managed by those foisted on them by the ruling party.

He emphasized the need for citizens to be eternally vigilant to protect democracy.
